The Grand National is the jewel in the crown of UK racing, and has produced countless standout performances of horse racing excellence over the years. Some efforts though, stand out from the crowd and below are their stories. From 100/1 outsiders to record-breakers, these are 20 horses Grand National victories you should read about:
1. Lottery — 1839 — 5/1 Favourite
Lottery won the very first Grand National, making him the horse with which the official Aintree roll of honour begins.
2. The Lamb — 1868 at 9/1; 1871 at 11/2
One of the great early National performances, this gritty grey won twice and remarkably returned for his second victory after spending two years out of action due to illness.
3. Manifesto — 1897 at 6/1 Favourite; 1899 at 5/1
Manifesto also won the Aintree Grand National twice and on top of that made a record breaking eight appearances in the National in total. For his second victory he carried a huge 12st 7lb .
4. Tipperary Tim — 1928 — 100/1
Seen by many to be one of the biggest shocks in National history, Tipperary Tim was one of only two horses to finish this famously chaotic race.
5. Golden Miller — 1934 — 8/1
Golden Miller is the only horse to have won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year. Now over 90 years ago, will this feat ever be matched?
6. Reynoldstown — 1935 at 22/1; 1936 at 10/1
Reynoldstown won back to back Grand Nationals, and even carried 12st 2lb to victory in 1936. Demonstrating that sometimes you just can’t hold ability down.
7. Nickel Coin — 1951 — 40/1
Nickel Coin most certainly deserves a mention in any ‘greatest’ style list, by being the most recent mare to win the Grand National, with no female horse having repeated the feat since. Of course the same doesn’t go for jockeys!
8. Foinavon — 1967 — 100/1
Foinavon at 100/a wasn’t given much of a chance of victory, but fate had different ideas. A gigantic pile-up resulted in a clear run through and famous victory at Foinavon at the 23rd fence.
9. Red Rum — 1973 at 9/1 Joint-Favourite; 1974 at 11/1; 1977 at 9/1
When you mention the Aintree Grand National, this is the first name that will pop into many racing fans heads. Red Rum is still the only horse to win the race three times (with two second place performances too!)
10. Aldaniti — 1981 — 10/1
We all love a good comeback story, and Aldaniti’s victory after a return from serious leg problems most certainly ticks that box! Jockey Bob Champion who himself was overcoming cancer rode Aldaniti to victory.
11. Corbiere — 1983 — 13/1
Corbiere gifted Jenny Pitman a memorable victory as she became the first woman to train a Grand National winner.
12. Mr Frisk — 1990 — 16/1
Mr Frisk , to this day, holds the course record, running it in 8 minutes 47.8 seconds,.
13. Earth Summit — 1998 — 7/1 Favourite
Earth Summit complete aremarkable treble in the shape of the Welsh, Scottish and Aintree Grand Nationals.
14. Neptune Collonges — 2012 — 33/1
Neptune Collonges beat Sunnyhillboy by a nose in the closest finish in Grand National history. He was also the first grey to win the race since 1961, over 50 years prior.
15. Tiger Roll — 2018 at 10/1; 2019 at 4/1 Favourite
Red Rum is a legend of the sport but in terms of legacy Tiger Roll tried to give him a run for his money. He was the first horse since Red Rum to win consecutive Grand Nationals.
16. Minella Times — 2021 — 11/1
Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to ride the winner of the Grand National in 2021, on board 11/1 Minella Times.
17. Noble Yeats — 2022 — 50/1
It’s not often that a seven year old wins the Nation, Noble Yeats did just that at 50/1. He was the first horse to do so since Bogskar in 1940.
18. I Am Maximus — 2024 at 7/1 Joint-Favourite; 2026 at 9/2 Favourite
I Am Maximus won in 2024, was then runner-up in 2025 and regained the crown in 2026. It’s Red Rum as a bench mark once more, no horse since him had recapture the Grand National after losing it.
